Group: Spencer

Spencer Valley incorporates Arrernte cultural sites, WW2 heritage and is popular bushwalking with local residents. The aim of Spencer Valley Landcare is to involve the community in the protection and restoration of the natural environment by reducing weed infestations.

Outcomes include: community involvement in caring for the local environment, reduced fire risk, removal of invasive plant species, increased awareness of Arrernte and WW2 cultural heritage.

Spencer Valley Landcare uses an integrated approach to weed control using herbicide, slashing and physical removal. Weed species targeted are Buffel Grass (Cenchrus ciliaris) and Cactus (Cylindropuntia fulgida). Both these species are invading the valley and threatening the natural environment.

Alice Springs Landcare Inc has been conducting Landcare field days removing rubbish and invasive weeds and creating fire breaks.

Alice Springs Landcare is committed to the longterm rehabilitation of Spencer Valley.
